Local Chapter History

On May 18, 1968, a call meeting of the proposed Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was held at the home of Soror Carrie M. Ross to discuss plans for the installation meeting on Saturday, May 25, 1968. The following slate of officers was elected to be presented at the establishment of the Greenwood Alumnae Chapter.

There were thirteen charter members; Bernice A. Duckett, Barbara Gray, Willie H. Lake, Sadie B. Luster, Jewel McAdams, Bleaka Moore, Johnnie M. Posey, Carrie M. Ross, Grace B. Simms, Jonelle Williams, Doris Wilson, and Shirley Wright. The first chapter meeting was called to order by Soror Edith Tweedy, the Regional Director. She installed the chapter and the slate of officers. The charter was signed by all members present on May 25, 1968.

Since its inception, the chapter has been giving back to the community by way of Habitat for Humanity, local Soup Kitchens, the American Red Cross. The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Hospital, donation for local, national, and international disasters, donations to women's and children's shelters, donations of books to schools and children's homes, Voter Education and Registration alongside the local NAACP, Christmas gifts for children's homes and the mentally ill, Blood Drives in conjunction with other local fraternities and sororities, hosting Red Carpet Movie events, and a minimum of three one thousand dollar scholarships annually.
